Protesters opposed to the release of an ex-KGB colonel gathered on Monday near the Austrian embassy in Vilnius, the Delfi news website reported. Viennese police on Thursday freed Mikhail Golovatov 24 hours after he was detained on a European arrest warrant issued by Vilnius. Lithuanians angry over Austria's release of ex-KGB agent The Lithuanian authorities accuse Golovatov of organizing the storming of the state television studio on January 13, 1991, in which 14 people were killed and dozens were injured. The violence came during the collapse of Soviet rule in the Baltic states. The Lithuanian parliamentary committee on foreign affairs is now discussing the possibility of breaking off diplomatic ties with Austria over Golovatov's release. Lithuania also intends to ask NATO and the European Union to examine the issue. Vilnius will also withdraw its ambassador to Austria in protest, presidential adviser Daiva Ulbinaite said on Monday.
