The rebels announced on Sunday that they were preparing a large offensive in order to take over control of some parts south from Tripoli, especially strategically important town of Bir al-Ghanam. NATO said on Saturday that it had intensified bombardment of western Libya and it hit Bir al-Ghanam last Friday. Protests against Libyan regime, that Gaddafi tried to quell, started in mid-February.
