U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has accused Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi’s forces of using rape and violence against women as a tool of war. The U.S. is "deeply concerned" by reports of wide scale rape in Libya, the State Department said in a statement and added that the International Criminal Court was informed about it. Clinton accuses Gaddafi of using rape as “tool of war” “We are troubled by reports that governments across the Middle East and North Africa were using sexual violence to punish protesters who demand democratic reforms,” it is said in the announcement. "Rape, physical intimidation, sexual harassment, and even so-called 'virginity tests' have taken place in countries throughout the region," Clinton said in the statement. "Gaddafi's security forces and other groups in the region are trying to divide the people by using violence against women and rape as tools of war, and the U.S. condemns this in the strongest possible terms," the U.S. secretary of state pointed out.
