The Muslim Brotherhood has been registered as the Freedom and Justice Party and will take part in parliamentary elections in Egypt, scheduled for September.

The Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt was formed in 1928, and was outlawed in 1954. But the movement built a strong social support network, and its members ran as independent candidates in previous elections, taking 20 percent of the votes in 2005. In order to qualify to register as a party according to Egypt's new rules, the Muslim Brotherhood will have to become "open to Christians and women" as well.
