Germany's authorities said on Monday that bean sprouts were the likely cause of an E.coli outbreak, but initial tests have shown no trace of the deadly strain. The search for the source of the epidemic which has claimed 21 lives in Germany continues, with Spanish cucumbers now ruled out, and with no proof thus far that the bacteria came with locally produced bean sprouts. The BBC reports today that EU Health Commissioner John Dalli has said the outbreak was limited to northern Germany "and does not need Europe-wide controls". He "warned against releasing unproven information on the outbreak, saying it spread fear and adversely affected farm producers", said the BBC. Dalli also urged Russia to lift its ban on import of fresh vegetables made in the EU, calling it "disproportionate". Meanwhile, the European Commission is set to discuss compensation for fruit and vegetable farmers and traders in the EU, who suffered huge losses since the start of the epidemic.
