Italy has roundly condemned Brazil’s decision not to extradite a former far-left militant convicted of a string of murders in the 1970’s. Cesare Battisti escaped from an Italian prison in 1981 and lived in France for many years. But he was forced to flee when Paris approved his extradition in 2007. Diplomatic tussle between Italy and Brazil Foreign Minister Franco Frattini described Brazil’s decision as an outrage to democracy. Rome is recalling its ambassador to Brazil, he says, and will then decide what legal options are available to overturn this ruling by Lula, the outgoing Brazilian President. A diplomatic missive will also be sent to the incoming Brazilian President Dilma Roussef, to convey the anger roused in Italy by the decision. For many, it is an affront to the families of the victims. Brazil’s current administration, though, is unfazed by the fuss. “There is no reason to be concerned,” Foreign Minister Celso Amorim told reporters. “Brazil has made a sovereign decision in accordance with the terms of its extradition treaty.” He was arrested while on the run in Brazil. He faces the maximum life penalty in Italy and, though convicted, denies having murdered anyone.
