At least 800 people are confirmed dead. The number could be far higher. Northwest Pakistan is paying a terrible price this monsoon season with the worst floods in living memory bringing disaster on a massive scale. But around a million people has been affected according to the United Nations and getting aid to the worst-hit areas is proving difficult. Regional capital Peshawar has been cut off and, across towns and villages, the floods have left lives in ruins. One elderly resident of the town of Charsadda looked at the pile of rubble that used to be his home. “I used my whole life earnings and hard work to build this house,” said Nabi Gul. “The river has washed it away. I am 75 years old now. I whether whether I will be able to rebuild it.” Pakistan’s army is leading the rescue and relief operation. Neighbouring Afghanistan has also been hit by the floods, with dozens killed. NATO-led troops have worked with the fledgling Afghan air force to rescue more than 2,000 people.
