Police intervened to quell clashes Sunday outside the Stadio Olimpico in the tense aftermath of a city derby that Roma won 2-1 over Lazio. The ANSA news agency reported that three Lazio fans were taken to a hospital with knife wounds. One of them was reportedly in critical condition. Car set ablaze, clashes after Roma's win Police reportedly arrested four Roma hooligans who appeared to have assaulted the opposing fans outside the stadium. In other clashes, a woman and two children managed to leave their car before it caught fire when it was hit by a volley of firecrackers. The blaze reportedly destroyed the vehicle despite the intervention of firefighters. Some city buses were blocked as hooligans disrupted traffic and damaged several garbage bins. Riots and firecracker explosions took place already before the game inside the stadium. Tension was high on the pitch, where Lazio's Argentine Cristian Ledesma was dismissed in the final minutes of the game after a general row. Clashes involving both players and club officials resumed after the final whistle, apparently after Roma captain Francesco Totti made a thumbs-down gesture to indicate a possible relegation of Lazio. Roma retain a one-point lead over Serie A champions Inter Milan with four games remaining, while Lazio lie just three points above the drop zone. "I'm sorry about what happened at the end, because Totti is an important player and he should avoid certain gestures," Lazio coach Edy Reja said. "He deserves a 10-game ban." It appears that Totti was trying to avenge a similar gesture made by Lazio's Roberto Baronio in the derby that Roma won 1-0 in December. (Beta/AP)
