The caravan was held up by around 100 armed men, who herded them away from the road and then gunned them down or hacked them to death with machetes. The country’s President Gloria Arroyo is now under pressure as the main suspect is Andal Ampatuan jnr, a local mayor, whose father heads the most influential clan in the area and is a committed supporter of Arroyo.
