New York Governor David Paterson said Friday afternoon that 12 or 13 people were killed in the shooting and hostage taking incident in the city of Binghamton. In a live-televised reaction to the incident, Paterson said that "lives have been lost" in what he called a "brutal attack against innocent people," adding that he believes 12 or 13 people were already confirmed dead. According to earlier reports, at least four people were shot and dozens more taken hostage in Binghamton, as a gunman went into the local American Civic Association building and started shooting. The American Civil Association helps immigrants and refugees with counseling, resettlement, citizenship, family reunification and translators. It also intervenes with emergencies including fighting, hunger and homelessness, according to the association's website. Staff at both the Mayor's Office and the Police Department of Binghamton told Xinhua over the phone that so far the local authorities had no information to release or confirm, including the casualties and the number of hostages being held. Local officials are on the scene and gathering information, the staff said. The mayor of Binghamton is expected to hold a press conference at 4 p.m. local time. According to unconfirmed reports, the gunman, a young male who is possibly Vietnamese, had killed himself after the deadly shooting.
