The bodies of seven men and two women were found in a grave near Ciudad Juarez, the Mexican city across the border from El Paso, Texas. Daniela Gonzalez, a spokesman for the Chihuahua state prosecutor, said the bodies had not been identified Saturday, CNN reported. They were believed to be casualties of the drug war that has claimed more than 400 lives this year in Juarez. 9 bodies found in grave in Mexico The Mexican government planned to send 5,000 soldiers to Juarez this weekend in an assault on the drug cartels. Juarez Mayor Jose Reyes Ferriz welcomed Operacion Conjunto Chihuahua. "The reality is that the military presence in the last several weeks has caused the violence to subside," he said. "We were averaging about 10 murders a week; and since February 26, when the troops starting arriving, we have been averaging about one." Enrique Torres, a spokesman for Joint Operation Chihuahua, called it a "full-frontal assault." He said 7,500 soldiers, 2,300 federal police and 1,600 local police would be in the state by Sunday. Ciudad Juarez Police Chief Roberto Orduna resigned Feb. 20 amid ongoing threats against his life. Drug gang leaders had threatened to kill a police officer every day until Orduna stepped down.
