Things are going from bad to worse for the Vatican in the row over the rehabilitation of a bishop who denies the extent of the Holocaust. Amid a wave of criticism directed at Pope Benedict XVI, Angela Merkel, the leader of the pontiff’s home country, has added her disapproval. Merkel speaks out against Pope’s decision She said: “The Pope and the Vatican must make it unambiguously clear that there can be no denial of the Holocaust and that of course there must be positive interaction with Judaism as a whole. From my point of view, so far there hasn’t been any sufficient clarification.” Prominant Catholics, Jewish leaders, politicians and newspaper commentators in Germany have also lambasted the Pope. They say he must reinstate the excommunication imposed on British-born Bishop Richard Williamson. The Bishop is quoted as saying he believes there were no gas chambers and no more than 300,000 Jews perished in concentration camps.
