As the crisis in the Democratic Republic of Congo deepens, children are among the worst affected. Fighting in the central African nation has displaced at least 250,000 people. European Commission sends aid to Congo refugees Despite deploying its largest peacekeeping force ever, the United Nations is struggling to keep them safe from hunger, disease and violence. The European Commission’s Humanitarian Aid Office (ECHO) is the biggest donor in the region. At the Bunia medical center in the north of the country, ECHO runs flights into the area to deliver food and medical care. “The Kindia health center here in Bunia started receiving the European Commission Humanitarian Aid Department funding just last month following the arrival of about 3,000 people that were displaced following renewed fighting,” said Regional Information Officer Daniel Dickinson. “I think it’s a good example of how we can act quickly with our partners and respond to very real humanitarian needs,” he added. Despite a pledge to back a ceasefire following peace talks at the weekend, rebels seized new territory in eastern Congo on Monday threatening fresh attacks on government troops and further unrest in the region.
