After many decades, Abkhazia has regained control of the northern part of the Kodori Gorge, says the province’s president. In an address to citizens of the breakaway Georgian republic, Sergei Bagapsh said that they had waited for this day “not just over the last 15 years of independence,“ but “many decades before,“ reports Interfaks. Insurgents in full control in Abkhazia Georgia withdrew its forces from the Kodori Gorge after Abkhazian insurgents entered the region. “We've withdrawn everything we had there, both police and civilians,“ Georgian Interior Ministry spokesman Shota Utiashvili told Reuters. He added that the upper part of the Kodori Valley was now fully in the hands of Russian and Abkhazian forces. This region, with a mainly Georgian population, used to be the only part of the province controled by Tbilisi. The head of Abkhazian forces, Anatoli Zaitsev, said that all villages in the northern part of the valley were under Abkhazi control. “All villages in the northern Kodori Valley have been liberated,“ said Zaitsev following a three-day military operation to drive Georgian forces out of the area. He could not say how many victims there had been on the Georgian side, as following an air strike, the Georgian army had withdrawn all its dead and injured from the territory. Bagapsh’s official representative Kristian Bzhania said that only one Abkazian soldier had died in the operation, and that there had been no other losses. He said that an administration would be established in the region in the coming days, in the village of Azhri where, until yesterday, Georgia had had its administrative headquarters for so-called Upper Abkhazia, adding that humanitarian assistance would also be offered.
