Among those with minor injuries were eight foreign nationals - two from Serbia, two from Romania, and one from Hungary, Slovakia, Poland and the United States each.

The cause of the explosion has not yet been found, but the media say it could have been a gas container that was put into operation on Monday, which was, due to a pressure drop, being checked by an employee of the licensing authority TUV Austria, who died in the accident.

The Baumgarten plant was built in 1959 as a pumping station and was then converted into a major gas transfer hub. It is considered to be one of the most important nodes in gas deliveries to Europe coming from Russia.

On Wednesday, the hub's operator brought all main transit lines back in service. Reuters reported that this resulted in gas prices across Europe falling, after soaring on Tuesday "triggered by supply worries."
