Serbian town pioneers "dumpster guards" idea

The company said that their idea was not inspired by "any other European city" - because, as they say, there are no such collectors of waste "anywhere in the world, either."

The 4-person "dumpster patrols" will operate according to the Law on Private Security, and make sure that Novi Sad's 440 underground dumpsters are not damaged, while also preventing illegal removal of garbage.

Gradska Cistoca's PR Danijela Jerkov explained that parts of dumpsters are being cut off and removed, incurring damages of over RSD 1 million each month.

She noted that "if the model (proposed) fails to solve the problem Novi Sad is facing" the company will "look for other ways to solve it."

"Dumpster guards" will have the right to record and detain, until the arrival of the police, the persons they find damaging this city property.

Commissioner for Information of Public Importance and Personal Data Protection Rodoljub Sabic has commented on these two provisions to deem them "contentious."
