Car that crashed with tram had fake "government" sticker

Eyewitness posting on social networks claimed, and media reported, that the black Audi was "a government vehicle" that was attempting to turn illegally over two pairs of tramway tracks when the accident happened.

However, the Interior Ministry (MUP) later denied this, saying that the car was private.

Belgrade-based daily Blic reported that the driver, Milan D. - said to be "an official of the SPS party" - told the police that he bought a fake "government vehicle" sticker and placed it on his car.

"I own a private company. I simply needed it. It made it easier to move round the city and get a parking space," he told the police investigating the scene of the crash.

The paper said he now faces separate charges for causing the traffic accident, and for using the fake sticker.
