"There are hundreds of refugees in Tabanovce (northern Macedonia), there are 500 in Presevo who have been returned from Croatia. Each time a train departs from Serbia to Croatia, they are rejected and send back to Serbia," he told state broadcaster RTS.

Djurovic added that thousands of people continue to reach Greek islands, "refugees are still coming from Turkey."

"I'm afraid we can expect a more difficult period and a deterioration in our country," he added.

Djurovic also noted that if there is a change of the migrant route, "Serbia will again be a way station," and that the Balkans is becoming a buffer zone "where many people will be going round in circles."

"It would be possible to accept those people if all countries accepted them," he said, according to Beta agency.

Djurovic also stated that Serbia "still must adhere to basic human values and must not use force under any circumstances."

Macedonia has closed its borders, with authorities there on Monday allowing 300 migrants, mostly Iraqis and Syrians, to cross from Greece.

The piling up of refugees on the Greek-Macedonian border started last week when Macedonia introduced stricter control of documents carried by Iraqi and Syrian citizens, as have other countries along the Balkan migrant route.
