"The time has come for me to hang up my boots. The injuries I have had over the past several years took their toll. I thank all the players I have played with and all the coaches I have worked with. And many thanks to the fans for their support throughout all these years," Vidic told the Red Star Belgrade official website.

Uzice-born Vidic joined Red Star at the age of 15 and spent a season on loan to Spartak Subotica before debuting for the Red Star first team in 2000.

He won one league title and two national cups with the Belgrade club.

Vidic moved to Spartak Moscow in 2004 and the transfer to Manchester United in 2006 proved to be the highlight of his career - he went on to become club captain, winning five English Premier League titles, one Champions League trophy and one FIFA Club World Cup.

He played 56 matches for the Serbian national team and scored two goals.
