Medal-winning science students excluded from celebrations

Mathematical Gymnasium Director Srdjan Ognjenovic said he was informed by "people from the protocol service" that the decision had been changed, adding that although severely disappointed, the students went to the final game to support the water polo team "with all their heart."

The City Assembly balcony has become the traditional place where the nation's great sporting successes are celebrated, when teams or individuals show up to be greeted by crowds of people.

The city's protocol service told Ognjanovic that the students were excluded for security reasons, as their safety could not be guaranteed on the crowded balcony and in very cold weather.

The Ministry of Youth and Sports previously provided them with tickets to the final game. Aleksa Konstantinov, a young mathematician won a gold medal in Kazakhstan, said that the ministry's officials told them they would "see them later at the balcony," adding, "they also did not we would not be there."

The newspaper said it "remains to be seen who made the decision," and quoted the protocol service as saying that security was the reason behind it, as "too many people were on the balcony."

Seven students from Belgrade - Ognjen Tosic, Aleksa Konstantinov, Aleksa Milojevic, Mihajlo Sporic, Dusan Novicic, David Milicevic and Kosta Bizetic - recently took part in the International Zhautykov Olympiad for mathematics, physics and computer science, held in Kazakhstan, and brought home three gold, one silver, and two bronze medals.

They competed with 450 students from 19 countries, including the host country, Russia, Romania, Bulgaria, and Ukraine.

Belgrade Mayor Sinisa Mali on Monday commented to say that more than 50 Serbian students had won medals in scientific competitions during 2015, and that the city did not wish to discriminate against them - while inviting them all to the balcony would have represented a safety risk.

Mali also announced that the city will organize a special reception for these students during the Belgrade Days event.
