B92's Matic expresses concern over safety of journalists

During the SPEAK UP! Conference on freedom of expression and media in the Western Balkans and in Turkey, he pointed out that the states should make commitment to open up processes of resolving all unresolved cases of killings and serious violence against journalists.

During the last SPEAK UP conference, we had presented the initial work of the Commission for Investigating the Killings of Journalists, initiated by journalists, and established by the Serbian Government, that functioned with the support of the OSCE Office for the Freedom of Media and Dunja Mijatovic, Matic recalled.

Now, two years later, we can speak about its success, Matic stressed, as the indictment was brought and the court trial started for the most famous case of killing of journalist Slavko Curuvija.

Other investigations are also intensified, so according to Matic "we can speak about the possibility of this model of Serbian commission to be implemented as a role model in other countries from the region, faced with the unresolved killings of journalists“.

One such commission modeled after the Serbian already exists in Montenegro, but it still has lots of problems in its operations, Matic underlined, adding that he finds it unacceptable the practice of prosecution that gives up on investigations for the attempted assassinations against journalists, such was the case when Montenegrin Prosecutor's office had blocked the investigation of the attempted killing of journalist Tufik Softic.

Similar commissions might be established in other states in the region, Matic considers, in order to solve the cases of numerous killings and disappearances of journalists.

He mentioned as an example Kosovo where at least seven cases of journalists gone missing and killed had taken place during and after the air raids on Serbia.
