Ombudsman warns about toxic waste from abandoned mine

In an opinion sent to the government and relevant ministries, he warned that the dam at the waste dump site was not repaired and that no work was done to remediate the polluted water and soil.

The document, published on the ombudsman's website, further stated that bearing in mind that the dam was damaged as a result of heavy precipitation, and that the waste material spilled over on several occasions during 2014, "there is the constant danger that the situation will repeat on a much larger scale during a future heavy rainfall."

Jankovic also said that in this case, there would be "realistic possibility that the toxic matter would find its way into the rivers outside this area, which would pose ecological danger for a large part of Serbia's territory."
