"Russia and Serbia rise and fall together"

Serbia was growing stronger when Russia stood strong, Chepurin said, adding that our countries "typically follow each other in rising and falling."

The prosperity and success of Serbia, the diplomat remarked, is also in the interest of Russia.

"The friendship between our nations is a strong foundation for the future of our countries," the Russian ambassador said, and added:

"I am certain that we are strategic allies when key issues are concerned - the issue of Kosovo, economic growth, interests of today's and future Europe, the Slavic and the Christian Orthodox world."

Chepurin remarked that his country was marking 1,153 years of statehood this year, and that no country except Russia has maintained its sovereignty for over 500 years.

Beside President Nikolic, the reception was attended by ministers Zorana Mihajlovic, Jadranka Joksimovic, Zeljko Sertic, Aleksandar Vulin, Velimir Ilic, Vanja Udovicic, Bratislav Gasic, Ivan Tasovac, and Nebojsa Stefanovic.

Serbian Army chief Gen. Ljubisa Dikovic was also there, as was leader of the DSS party Sanda Raskovic-Ivic, Crown Prince Aleksandar Karadjordjevic and Princess Katarina Karadjordjevic, and ambassadors of Iran, Italy, Britain, China, and Sweden posted in Belgrade, along with many public figures and other diplomatic representatives.
