Citizens of Serbia most often seek asylum in Germany, Jelena Vasiljevic, assistant to the Border Police Directorate head, stated on Thursday.

As for people who sought asylum in Serbia, Vasiljevic said that according to the data for 2014, 16,500 people applied for asylum, adding that these are mostly citizens of the third world countries - Syria, Pakistan, Somalia etc.Since the beginning of 2015, as many as 6,500 people expressed intention to seek asylum in Serbia, and these are mostly people who take Serbia only as a transit country on their way to the EU countries, she said.
As for illegal immigrants from Kosovo and Metohija, Vasiljevic said that the peak was recorded in February with around 1,000 persons registered, while since the beginning of March there have been only around 300 persons who were prevented in their attempt to cross the border with Hungary.
