Lawyers stage protest in Belgrade
The protest today heard that the strike would be over "once President Tomislav Nikolić signs a decree" to adopt a law that will accept all the strikers' demands, described as "constitutional, and protective of the citizens' rights."All presidents of local bar associations took the statge today, and the message they sent was that lawyers were "not defending tycoons, but are fighting for their rights guaranteed in the Constitution, and for the rights of the citizens to arrange their legal affairs by the autonomy of their will."
The protest also heard that the authorities do not wish to meet the demands because they are "protecting the interests of some people in politics and in the economy."
A meeting held between their representatives and Minister of Justice Nikola Selaković on November 1 ended without agreement.
Lawyers seek fundamental changes to the Law on Notaries and a reduction of the flat tax. They said after the meeting the conversation was "sincere and meaningful", but that it is necessary to continue the dialogue in order to find solutions satisfactory to both sides.
The Serbian palriament on Monday discussed proposed amendments to the Law on Notaries and the Law on Real Estate Trade, but lawyers believe that these amendments would not meet their demands.
