Two children die in fire in Roma settlement

The children were alone in the house, the public broadcaster RTS said.

Firefighters, ambulances, and a prosecutor were all seen at the scene. The cause of the fire and other circumstances related to the deadly accident remain unknown at this time.

Last month three children died in a fire that broke out in a Roma settlement in Belgrade, when a shack built of cardboard and wood planks burned down.

NGOs who work to improve the position of the Roma population said at the time they thought it was high time for the issue of "unhygienic settlements" to be resolved.

Ombudsman Saša Janković said on that occasion that "the state and the local community bore a big part of the responsibility for the fire."
