Landslide could collapse hill into Drina, block river

"It is estimated that about four million cubic meters of soil is moving toward the Drina. This landslide has cut the town in two parts and blocked traffic in this part of the main road," he explained.

Passengers "from the upper part of the municipality" are now taken to the hydro power plant from which they, on foot, cross the river and the border to the Serb Republic (RS) in Bosnia-Herzegovina, and then board buses that take them back across the bridge in Karakaj, and then to Loznica in Serbia.

An old road is being rebuilt and will serve only as an alternative supply route, Bogićević added.

The town now fears that the worst case scenario could come to pass, where the hill would collapse in the river, tear down a bridge and block the river, which would then flood both Zvornik and Mali Zvornik.

Some villages in the municipality remain cut off from the world after the floods swept away bridges and roads, while landslides destroyed more than 60 homes. The Serbian Army troops will on Tuesday bring food and fuel to one such settlement, Podgaj, in a helicopter.

Mali Zvornik, meanwhile, requires drinking water, fuel oil, gasoline, heavy machines, and trucks.

"A donation of fuel oil has arrived, but that is not enough. We use about three tons a day," Bogićević concluded.
