Bayern investigated by UEFA over Kosovo banner
The disputed banner had a changed UEFA slogan on it with the text "Say no to racism, say yes to Kosovo," and Bayern now faces a penalty fee of EUR 70,000.This is the second time this season that Bayern fans express support for Kosovo during Bayern's matches in the Champions League. The first incident happened at a match against Victoria Plzen, where a banner was shown saying "UEFA accept Kosovo."
Xherdan Shaqiri, an ethnic Albanian from Kosovo who has Swiss citizenship plays for Bayern, celebrated victory in the Champions League in London last year by waving the Kosovo flag.
Bayern could be punished for another offensive banner, although no investigation has been launched into that incident yet, Tanjug reported. The banner in question was a homophobic cartoon depicting Mesut Ozil, a German player who plays for Arsenal.
UEFA announced that it would show no tolerance toward clubs whose fans drag politics into sport and express racism. However, it remains unclear how the announced fine of EUR 70,000 might support this position.
On the other hand, UEFA this year already dished out a more severe penalty to Moscow's CSKA, which had to play in an empty stadium after its fans insulted Yaya Toure. Glasgow's Celtic paid EUR 50,000 in fines when its fans displayed political messages.
