The River Danube in Belgrade has not been polluted after a barge carrying iron pyrite ore capsized while docked in Port of Belgrade on Wednesday.

The 50-meter barge, one of four in a convoy owned by Croatia's Dunavski Lloyd company, turned over and spilled 850 tons of the mineral into the river.But the agency said on Thursday that the level of iron found in the water was "moderate," and close to the upper safe limit.
On Wednesday, the authorities preventively shut down the Vinča water treatment plant, leaving residents of Vinča and Leštane settlements without water supply, that will not be restored until tomorrow when inspectors will take water samples for analysis one more time.
Meanwhile, experts said that the pyrite that was spilled yesterday can be dangerous "only if mixed with heavy metals," and that it posed no health risk in its pure form.
The reason the barge capsized remains unknown at this time. The Port of Belgrade company issued a statement on Wednesday, saying it had no liability, "since the barge was in transit, under supervision of a Dunavski Lloyd ship that was at the border crossing at Port of Belgrade when the barge overturned."
