BELGRADE The Independent Association of Journalists of Serbia NUNS) has expressed concern about the circumstances that forced Aida Corovic to the Urban-In NGO. NUNS calls on the authorities to effectively respond to threats sent to the activist. Authorities urged to respond to threats sent to activist Corovic announced that she was stepping down as the organization's director, but that there were "no threats, blackmail and ridicule that she will shut her mouth or tie HER hands." This activist, based in Novi Pazar in southwestern Serbia, was given permanent police escort in November after it was deemed that the threats she was receiving seriously endangered her safety. NUNS said that the fact that Corovic announced her decision on Human Rights Day "spoke very clearly about the degree of freedom and protection of human rights in Serbia, and especially in Sandzak." "A state in which permanent police escort is the only way to preserve someone's life and preserve the right to freedom of expression cannot receive a passing grade on the test of democracy," the statement said. NUNS noted Corovic was one of many that the police must guard around the clock, "only because she dares to loudly and clearly state her opinions and act for the benefit of all endangered people, for the sake of the protection of fundamental human rights and dignity." This association also expressed its regret that Urban-In was left without its most important member "in such a drastic manner," but also the hope that "this formal loss will be a new impetus to future work of the NGO." In November, when Corovic was granted police protection, she said the reason was an increasing number of online messages calling for her "liquidation" after she spoke about women being coerced to wear hijabs in Sandzak, the region that is home to a large Muslim minority in Serbia. Corovic said that another reason was a theater play during she read out a text written by a Pakistani rape victim. (Medija Centar, file) B92 Beta
