BELGRADE The City of Belgrade's municipality of New Belgrade (Novi Beograd) is on Thursday marking its day - and 65 years since it was founded. A series of gatherings and ceremonies will be taking place, to highlight the achievements of individuals and organizations who contributed to New Belgrade's reputation and development. New Belgrade marks 65 years since founding Works to build an entirely new, planned city on the left bank of the Sava River in Belgrade started on April 11, 1948. The so-called working brigades - young volunteers tasked with rebuilding the country devastated in the Second World War - descended from all areas of Yugoslavia and started building a new city on the swampy and sandy terrain. The effort was the biggest construction undertaking in Yugoslavia at that time. Along with Chandigarh in India and Brasilia in Brazil, it stands as an example of modern architecture. The municipality said in its statement announcing today's events that New Belgrade, known for its modern boulevards and promenades, is nowadays "completing its urban identity" and emerging as a modern business center of Serbia's capital city and of the region. New Belgrade is formally not a city, but one of Belgrade's municipalities - however, with over 200,000 residents, it is also the most populous municipality in Serbia. In the past years, it has also boasted the highest average monthly salaries in the country. Known for its large and numerous residential blocks, lately New Belgrade has also become home to many corporate HQs, as well as Serbia's largest indoor sports venue, Belgrade Arena. The former federal government complex, the SIV - now the Palace of Serbia - is also located in New Belgrade. (Milan Bozovic, file) B92 Tanjug
