BELGRADE If someone drinks several glasses of milk with upper limit of aflatoxin in a few days, we cannot talk about toxicity, says the Serbian health minister. Slavica Djukic-Dejanovic told Radio Television of Serbia (RTS) that liver problems could occur if a person took large amounts of such milk for at least a year. Milk in stores safe to drink, minister claims “We have not had aflatoxicosis in 25 years. The limit was until recently 0.5 micrograms per liter and we so far have not found any value higher than 0.1. Everything is safe,” the minister said on Friday morning. Djukic-Dejanovic stressed that the most important thing was that all suspicious milk products had been taken off shelves, adding that all products found in stores were completely safe for consumption. She stressed that the increased levels of aflatoxin in certain samples were mostly on the upper limit. “Psychological atmosphere is not good, we have a whole affair now. However, I assure you that all measures have been taken to remove all milk products with upper limit and increased amounts of aflatoxin from shelves. This has been done,” the minister noted. However, Vojvodina Agriculture Secretary Goran Jesic said on Thursday that results of new analyses were even worse than the initial ones and that levels of aflatoxin were even higher.
