Town mourns victims of nightclub fire As locals gathered last night to light candles and place flowers in downtown Novi Sad, in memory of the victims - all in their 20s - some details emerged of the circumstances in which they perished. Novi Sad Mayor Igor Pavlicic said the investigation thus far had determined that the cause of the fire was most likely faulty wiring and that there were up to 350 people inside the club at the time. MUP's Emergency Situations Sector chief Predrag Maric said that the owner and two persons renting the premises were detained, and revealed that the fire was reported to the firefighters "only between 15 and 30 minutes" after it had started. Maric also said that Interior Minister Ivica Dacic had ordered extraordinary inspections of all similar venues in Serbia. According to him, the club, Contrast, was overcrowded at the time of the fire. He also revealed that in the past, lesser charges were filed when it was found that the premises had not met fire standards. The investigation will now also focus on why the blaze was not reported immediately, he explained. Images and names of the victims are displayed during a commemoration ceremony (Beta) B92 Beta Tanjug
