Ice that formed on the Danube during more than two weeks of freezing cold weather is now moving - bridges and other infrastructure in Belgrade are not at risk. This was heard late on Sunday from the city emergency situations team. A total of three icebreakers have been sent out to help clear the ice upstream from Belgrade toward Zemun, on Europe's second largest river. In the municipality of Zemun, some 100 boats were damaged over the weekend in the marina when ice started moving after the temperatures rose above zero degrees centigrade. A boat-restaurant sank near the Hotel Jugoslavija in New Belgrade, while another floated down the river. A public company in charge of river management in Belgrade, the Directorate for Emergency Situations, traffic, communal and river police units are all monitoring the situation, it was said. Owners of boats, rafts, and floating homes were advised to constantly monitor their property and take all necessary measures to ensure their safety. But they were also asked not to try to recover their boats from the water at this point. The main mass of ice is expected to reach Belgrade soon from upstream, but the situation will after that normalize within 24 hours, the authorities said. Meanwhile, 3,300 people remain snowbound in other parts of Serbia and can only be reached by helicopter, said MUP Emergency Situations Sector chief Predrag Maric.
