Amnesty International has handed a petition requesting Serbia to pass a bill that will regulate forced evictions of Roma to Serbian Deputy PM Bozidar Djelic. After a meeting with Djelic, Balkans team campaign leader Milos Bogicevic told reporters that the delegation had submitted the petition with 20,000 signatures which had been collected around the world in the last six months. AI submits petition to deputy prime minister “The petition calls on Djelic to influence the Serbian government to pass a law that would regulate the eviction issues in accordance with the international standards,” he stressed and added that reasons for the petition were cases of the evicted Roma (Gypsies) which were qualified as violation of human rights. According to Amnesty International’s assessment, fundamental human rights envisaged by the international standards were not respected during the eviction of Roma. Bogicevic explained that this was especially the case with forced eviction of Roma families from shanty towns under the Gazela Bridge, Belville neighborhood and several other locations in Belgrade. “If there has to be an eviction, then certain rules and procedures need to be respected. To offer an adequate accommodation and not to leave people out in the street, which happens often,” the Amnesty International representative pointed out.
