The number of requests for asylum in Serbia is rising and in accordance with European rules Serbia will have to find a solution to the problem, said the UNHCR. Serbia must secure suitable lodgings for asylum-seekers from other countries, the UN agency's representatives said on Tuesday, reported Beta. UNHCR: Serbia must deal with asylum requests From Jan. 1-May 31, 2011, a total of 976 requests for political asylum were sent to the Serbian government, or five times more year-on-year, UNHCR representatives told a news conference, citing a UNHCR report. A total of 223 asylum requests are currently being reviewed by the Serbian government. Since the adoption of asylum legislation in April 2008, not a single request has been approved. Last year the authorities threw out 28 requests for asylum. According to the UNHCR report, most of the applicants are from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Palestine, Iran, Tunisia, Algeria, Syria, Morocco, Cameroon and other African, Asian and Arab states, including the Russian Federation. On the other hand, the number of asylum seekers from Serbia seeking asylum in the EU has more than doubled compared with last year. Around 75 percent of the requests originated in Kosovo, according to the UNHCR.
