Serbia must be strong and have a powerful army, and it should not realize its goals through warfare but rather peaceful means. This was heard today from Serbian Defense Minister Dragan Sutanovac, who attended a ceremony marking 200 years since the Battle on the Varvarin Field, that took place during the First Serb Uprising against the Ottoman Turk invasion and occupation of the country. 200 years since Serbo-Russian victory over Turks "It is our obligation to preserve the memory of glorious ancestors who wrote history and draw lessons from their deeds," Sutanovac said. He pointed out that recognition of sovereignty and integrity, mutual cooperation between states, honoring of rights and freedoms of citizens and religious and cultural differences are the principles based on which we build our state with an intention of becoming a full member of the EU. Sutanovac said that in the past, Serbia paid quite a high price for freedom and the right to build its future in peace, and underscored that the marking of the 200th anniversary of the battle shows how important dignity and freedom are for a Serbian soldier. Sutanovac and Varvarin Mayor Zoran Milenkovic previously unveiled a monument to the heroes of the 1810 battle. In one of the most brilliant victories of the uprising, 9,000 Serbs and 3,000 Russians, outnumbered three to one, defeated the Turkish army headed by Hurshid-Pasha. The ceremony today was also attended by Russian Ambassador Aleksandr Konuzin, Serbian Army CoGS Lt. Gen. Miloje Miletic, other officials and representatives of organizations. (Beta)
