Reparation works on landslides in the municipality of Trgoviste, southern Serbia, are expected to begin shortly. The works should reduce the likelihood that a new flood wave would endangering more than 100 homes in the area. Landslides to be secured in southern town Despite the situation in Trgoviste, described as alarming, Chief of the Serbian Police (MUP) Emergency Situation Sector Predrag Maric told B92 that the beginning of the reparation was delayed due to procedures. Trgoviste Municipal President Vlasta Petrovic says that 420 residents – about 107 homes – were in the danger zone and that all of them have been informed about what to do if the landslide started moving. The MUP Emergency Situation Sector issued an announcement earlier stating that a landslide had appeared in the valley of the Tripusnica River, less than two kilometers from the town. With about 300,000 cubic meters of dirt, the landslide would first obstruct the riverbed and after breaking through a natural dam, it would produce a wave which would devastate Trgoviste and the Pcinj River valley, said experts Municipal Assembly Speaker Radoslav Jordanovic said that evacuation plans were in place, and that residents were given instructions, and added that the measures were undertaken “solely for preventive reasons”, urging people to remain calm.
