BELGRADE --
Human Rights Watch (HRW) has called on the Serbian government to fully protect the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) persons.
According to the HRW website, the organization sent a letter to Serbian President Boris Tadić advising that the Serbian government should quickly take visible steps in order to end a spate of violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.
Homophobic violence in recent months has threatened LGBT people's access to basic freedoms. Leading politicians should show courage to condemn hatred and prevent abuse, Advocacy Director in the LGBT program at HRW Boris Dittrich pointed out.
HRW called on the Serbian government to work with Serbian LGBT rights defenders to ensure that a pride parade can be held in 2010 without fear of violent disruption.
HRW also calls on the Serbian government to institute training in schools about equality and the need to prevent discrimination.
