Children from Gracanica’s Roma community visit an educational center every day after school, where 15 teachers and volunteers help them with their homework. The Roma educational center in Gracanici was founded eight years ago. Roma educational center in Gracanica The idea was to help bring Roma children up to speed for regular school work. Paid instructors and volunteers work with children of pre-school to school age. A poor knowledge of Serbian often poses a problem for Roma children at school. The center keeps a close eye on Roma children’s progress at school. 100 children visit the center on a daily basis. The center was established thanks to the Balkan Sunflower NGO, and moved to new premises two years ago. The local Communities Office and the Irish KFOR battalion helped in its construction. A center of this nature means a great deal to local Roma. In future, there are plans to build a children’s playground around the center, while a summer camp for Roma children is also under preparation.
