Around 12 Serbian fans contracted legionnaires’ disease at the World Handball Championships in Croatia, reports the Health Ministry. None of the players themselves were infected, however. One person was taken to the hospital suffering from pneumonia, but is in good condition generally, while the others, who have headaches, high temperatures, dry coughs and muscle pains, have been told to get some bed rest. Serbian fans contract Legionnaires’ disease The Serbian citizens were not the first to contract the disease at the championships. Four Norwegian, one Danish and one Croatian fan also became ill during the course of the tournament. Even though it was initially assumed that the Serbian fans had contract the disease in their hotels and apartments, the case of the Norwegian and Danish fans proves otherwise. The first results of epidemiological tests show that the source of the illness was probably located in the sports halls, and not in the various hotels where the fans were staying. Legionnaires’ disease is characterized by atypical pneumonia caused by the Legionella bacteria, which can survive in water for over a year. The disease is most commonly spread through air conditioning, and the bacteria is commonly found in hospitals, hotels, and other devices that increase moisture in the air. If the disease is not treated with antibiotics it can be fatal in 15 to 25 percent of cases.
