14 Serbian nationals have contracted Legionnaires' disease while in Croatia recently, the Ministry of Health has announced. All 14 are males, who were in that neighboring country to attend the World Handball Championship games. Fans return from Croatia with Legionnaires' Immediately before the competition started, four Norwegians, one Dane and one Croat were diagnosed with this bacterial disease. They were all staying in the Istria town of Porec. Upon learning about this, the Infectious Diseases Prevention and Control Unit of Dr. Milan Jovanovic Batut Institute in Belgrade organized the monitoring of all 99 Serbians who traveled to Croatia for the championship. One of those diagnosed with the disease has been hospitalized with pneumonia, but is in a good overall condition. The others exhibited mild symptoms of the illness that can be lethal.
