Poverty and unemployment continue to plague the town of Novi Pazar, despite the best efforts of charitable organizations. The Red Cross soup kitchen in Novi Pazar may soon be out of business because the lack of food being supplied to it. Novi Pazar beset by poverty, unemployment Tens of thousands of people count on the organization for help, says Novi Pazar Red Cross Secretary Ljiljana Kostic. Because of the alarming humanitarian situation, the Red Cross has once again appealed to successful companies and individuals to help the soup kitchen, which feeds 900 of the neediest people a day. “The kitchen’s work is being financed by the Serbian and Norwegian Red Cross, the local authorities are giving money for bread, but at this moment in time, the food reserves are all but empty,” Kostic says. She says that in the last two months, the number of people coming to the kitchen has increased, adding that because of insufficient supplies a further 1,000 people are forced to go without. The fact that more and more people are asking the Red Cross for clothes, shoes and hygiene products is also indicative of the increase in poverty in the town. “Tens of thousands of people submit various requests every year, mostly refugees and displaced people from Kosovo, the elderly, the sick, those who’ve been made redundant,” Kostic said. She said that the Red Cross in Novi Pazar had recently solicited donations from over 500 potential donors in the town. Only 16 positive answers arrived, bringing in barely more than EUR 1,100. The Novi Pazar Red Cross receives the bulk of its assistance from foreign humanitarian organizations, which most often provide clothes and shoes for the poor. However, the issue of unemployment is closely linked to the issue of poverty in Novi Pazar, with unemployment at 50 percent. Statistics show that after south Serbia, Novi Pazar has the highest unemployment rate in the country. Those looking for jobs will not agree to work under poor conditions, even though employers claim that good conditions would be provided for good, qualified workers. (Beta archive)
