After a string of deadly traffic accidents, Interior Minister Ivica Dacic called an emergency police meeting to deal with the issue. He has called on police officers to increase preventive measures for controlling traffic, and for the draft law on traffic security to be returned to parliamentary procedure immediately. Dacic in appeal to drivers The draft law was completed three years ago but has yet to reach parliament. Dacic has called on drivers to protect their own lives and the lives of others by obeying traffic regulations. The draft was finished in May 2005, but has yet to be adopted by parliament. The proposal was not submitted to parliament because of a disagreement between the Capital Investments and Interior Ministries over who would present the law. After the dispute was resolved, the law entered parliamentary procedure but has yet to be adopted. According to the initial draft, driving under the influence of alcohol could carry a three-year prison sentence. A points system would be implemented as well where licenses would be revoked after 18 points. The limit for blood-alcohol measures would be 0.3 per mill. Police would also have the power to take into custody drivers with a blood-alcohol level higher than 1.2 per mill., according to the draft. Licenses would also be revoked for speeding violations that are 50 kmph above the given speed limit in populated areas, and 70 kmph higher in unpopulated areas. A category of violent driving would also be introduced that would include gross violations of traffic laws and disrespect for regulations and fellow road users.
