The government yesterday reached agreement with protesting reservists from Kursumlija to reimburse their wages. The agreement was signed by Justice and Finance Ministers Dusan Petrovic and Mirko Cvetkovic on behalf of the government and strike leader Dejan Milosevic for the reservists, who have been protesting for several months over wages they claimed are owed to them dating back to the Kosovo conflict in 1999. Milosevic said that the agreement would stipulate a EUR 25mn payment of welfare benefits to underdeveloped municipalities to be split between Kursumlija, Prokuplje, Blace, Doljevac, Zitoradja, Lebane and Bojnik. “We’re very happy with the agreement we signed today with government representatives. All the reservists are also satisfied, as Kursumlija municipality alone will receive EUR 5.3mn,” he said, adding that payment was expected to begin next week. Milosevic said that the money would be paid out to the strikers’ committees in each town, before being distributed to individuals. The Kursumlija veterans said that yesterday’s agreement would not mark an end to their protests, and that they would continue every evening “until every last veteran of the 1999 Kosovo conflict receives his wages.”
