The 800th anniversary since the founding of the first Serbian hospital was marked Wednesday at Studenica monastery. The ceremony included a prayer for the health of the citizens of Serbia, followed by another one in the monastery guest hall. Eight centuries of first Serbian hospital Prayers in the Studenica Church of Ascension were led by Episcope of Zica Hrizostom with the monastery brotherhood. The event, dedicated to the memory of the founders of Serbian medicine, was also attended by Tomica Milosavljevic, Radomir Naumov and Velimir Ilic, ministers of health, religion, and infrastructure. At the academy held on the occasion, Minister Naumov on behalf of Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica, welcomed the guests. Recalling the first steps of Serbian medicine and of the Serbian state, he said that "today once again, we are witnessing efforts to organize the Serbian state and church". "Today we are facing a challenge to preserve our state, precisely in this territory where its founding started," Naumov said. The monastery of Studenica is a monument not only to the Serbian, but also to European culture and medicine," Milosavljevic told the gathering.
