The Hague Tribunal expressed "serious concern" over the state of health of one of its indictees, Zdavko Tolimir. Tolimir, a Bosnian Serb Army (VRS) general and former intelligence chief to the Hague fugitive Ratko Mladic, facing trial on a war crimes indictment, has now stopped taking his medication, the tribunal sources said. Hague "seriously concerned" over Tolimir The tribunal's secretary, Hans Holthuis, Friday afternoon sent an official note to the court council informing it that Tolimir's condition was "serious, frail, and very upsetting." Holthius said that since his June 1 transfer to a Hague detention unit, Tolimir had refused to cooperate with the medical staff, at the same time refusing to adhere to his therapy. Tolimir has given various reasons for rejecting medical care, from claims that his religious convictions prevented him to do so, to those that he felt well." "Considering his condition and such attitude, there is a real and serious risk of a development that would threaten the defendant's life," the note said. Another factor that aggravates the situation, according to Holthius, is the fact the former general has decided to organize his own defense. Tolimir, visibly thinner than on his previously published photographs, appeared in the Hague courtroom in June to on that, and every consequent chance he got, call on the Tribunal to investigate the circumstances of his arrest. Although Serbian and Bosnian Serb officials said at the time he was arrested near Bratunac, eastern Bosnia, Tolimir claims he was picked up by police in Belgrade, and then transported over the border to Bosnia. At the same time, he has requested Belgrade lawyer Nebojsa Mrkic to be appointed his defense counsel, which the court refused on grounds of a potential conflict of interest.
