KPS: Short circuit caused fire in Serb house

The report on the incident was submitted by inspectors from Kosovska Mitrovica municipal fire prevention department.

KPS spokesman in northern Kosovska Mitrovica, Besim Hoti, said that no one was injured in the fire.

However, Kosovo Ministry’s Secretary Dušan Proroković said earlier the incident was "a terrorist act."

“The burning of a home in what was once a Serbian village that is now abandoned, is a terrorist act with the goal of discouraging Serbs and other non-Albanians from trying to return to their homes and live in these regions of Kosovo,” Proroković told Beta.

Proroković said that the burning of the house in Svinjare, after the assault on a Serb in Vučitrn and other serious incidents in northern Kosovo in the last several months, shows that "something needs to be done in the area".

He said that the international peacekeeping mission in Kosovo is to be held responsible for these acts and added the United Nations Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK) must solve the cases and show that it can take care of the responsibilities that the UN Security Council entrusted it with.

During the March 2004 Kosovo riots, Svinjare, a Serb village five kilometers from Kosovska Mitrovica, had 150 of its homes burned.

Most of its residents have yet to return, fearing robberies and attacks against their property, although their homes have been restored.
