“Search for Mladić not a charade”
“Search raids do not tolerate delays. We from the Action Team tried to delay it, bearing in mind the delicacy of the moment with the Cabinet make-up negotiations in progress, but we had no choice, since we would be allowing the Hague Tribunal to claim that we were obstructing the process and refusing to carry out the raid”, Vukčević said.He said the search raid shows Serbia was willing to cooperate with the Tribunal, since it had risked causing the Cabinet negotiations to break down.
Vukčević said he had the support of Serbian President Boris Tadić from the very first day and that the first person he asked for support after he accepted the post Action Plan coordinator at the recommendation of Carla Del Ponte, was Prime Minister Vojislav Koštunica.
“I would not have accepted the job without this support. Koštunica assured me immediately this was no charade and that there was political will to get this job done, because it is the most important task Serbia has to do”, he explained.
Vukčević said they were intensively investigating allegations of a new mass grave near Raška. He said they launched activities as soon as the information reached them, adding that UNMIK said it had ethnic Albanian witnesses who would lead them to the exact location of the mass grave, since it was on remote terrain.
When they appeared on site, Vukčević said no one from UNMIK showed up and no explanation was provided for this. A new investigation on site has been scheduled for June 7, he added.
