Haradinaj case witness dead

The witness, identified as Kujtim Berisha, died in Podgorica yesterday, when a vehicle driven by Aleksandar Ristović hit him and two other Roma men.

The investigation into the death now includes the Montenegrin homicide police, since the possibility that Berisha was deliberately targeted has not been ruled out, Podgorica daily Vijesti reports today.

The daily points out that late Berisha, a Dečani resident, had recently met with a representative of a “foreign organization or foreign state”, concerning to the upcoming Haradinaj trial.

The trial of Ramush Haradinaj, a former KLA commander, is set to begin on March 5 at the Hague.

Serb List for Kosovo leader Oliver Ivanović believes there is sufficient reason to believe that the protected witness was in fact murdered, adding that the Kosovo police explanation was “naïve”.

Kosovo Police Service (KPS) spokesman Veton Elshani said “no murders were registered in Kosovo” yesterday.

“Some of the previous murders directly linked to the Hague indictee never ended up in court since those who pointed in his direction would later mysteriously withdraw their statements and keep silent”, Ivanović said.

Chief Hague prosecutor Carla Del Ponte’s team on numerous occasions complained they had difficulty finding witnesses willing to testify against Haradinaj, charged with war crimes committed in 1999 in Kosovo.
